The history of Greylands is deeply important to how we run our business today. The wealth of knowledge passed down through our family and through experience in this industry is irreplaceable.  We are so thankful to have this heritage.  We love sharing all Greylands has to offer with family, friends and visitors and enjoying time together here.

Operating since the late 1800s

Greylands has been owned and operated as a beef cattle production enterprise since the late 1800s by the Bailey family. Their descendants are the owners and operators today. Prior to a branch of Bailey descendants settling in the Goorangoola area, Bailey descendants lived and farmed in the St Albans area, Hawkesbury, NSW, Australia.   Baileys have been farming in Australia for over 200 years, and at Greylands for almost 150 years.

A Toyota Advertisement filmed at Greylands in the 1990s!

(video below)

Greylands has had plenty of unique events over the years.  One unique event in the 1990's was  Toyota filming at Greylands as part of a Toyota TV advertisement.  Greylands homestead and home paddock, the Greylands Toyota Landcruiser, the Yates family (Greylands managers at the time) and Margaret Bailey, were part of the advertisement. For the first 10 seconds of the ad, the actor walks out of the Greylands homestead and the dog jumps onto the ute in the homestead paddock. The Yates family and Margaret Bailey feature as 'extras' as the wedding guests waving, (27-35 seconds into the video). The wedding guest scene was filmed down the road from Greylands at Roselands Church. Roselands Church sadly blew down in a severe storm in the 1990's, after this was filmed. So now on that land beside the road it is only a picnic area. The majority of the ad is filmed elsewhere, not at Greylands.

Also of interest, our ancestor Henry Bailey (born 1841) gifted the land and finances for the construction of Roselands Church. Margaret Bailey painted the background painting of Roselands Church.

The natural environment at Greylands and in the region:

Wedge-tailed eagle

Magnificent wedge-tailed eagles are often seen at Greylands.  The first video below was taken in a paddock in 2024, where we frequently see them.  The second video below is of some younger wedge tailed eagles closer to the house in March 2025. Wedge-tailed eagles are found across NSW in open woodlands with good ground cover, but they inhabit diverse environments from the coast to the outback. Once airborne, they use air currents and thermals from nearby hills to soar to heights of up to 2km above the ground.

Crested Pigeon

Crested pigeons are commonly seen and heard at Greylands. They have a distinct fluttering sound as they take off.  This crested pigeon built a nest and raised a chick amongst the grape vine at the homestead.

At 8 seconds in this video it demonstrates the distinct sound of their take-off.

Hunter Gas Pipeline proposed by Santos to go through Greylands!

Unfortunately the Hunter Gas Pipeline (Santos) is proposed to go through Greylands farmland as part of its  833km course from Narrabri to Newcastle.  The majority of farmers oppose the pipeline,  as do we.  The pipeline would have a huge impact on the environment  and would be highly disruptive to farming operations with a 200m wide corridor.  More about the pipeline in the links below:
